Electric oven & stove

Stove burner or cooktop element not working

One burner on my electric stove is dead or stuck on high. What's the fix?

Straight answer: A single dead coil burner is usually the element or the receptacle it plugs into. On a glass-top, it's the element under the glass or its switch. A burner stuck on high is almost always the infinite switch. All of these are standard repairs.

What it usually means

  1. Coil element burnt out or its terminals corroded
  2. Burner receptacle (the socket) burnt
  3. Infinite switch failed, so the burner is dead or stuck on high
  4. Radiant element under a glass cooktop failed
  5. Loose wiring at the switch

Safe to check yourself

  • On a coil stove, with everything off and cool, swap the dead coil with a working one of the same size; if the problem moves, it's the coil
  • Look at the coil terminals for pitting or burn marks
  • On a glass-top, note whether the burner indicator light comes on
  • Switch the stove off at the breaker if a burner won't turn off

Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before touching anything behind or under it. If you're not comfortable, skip the checks and call; the visit covers all of this.

Time to call when

  • A burner stays on high no matter the setting (turn off the breaker and call)
  • The receptacle is burnt or the coil terminals are scorched
  • A glass-top element is dead or cracked
