Electric oven & stove
Oven temperature runs hot, cold or won't hold
My oven burns on one side or everything takes longer than the recipe says. Is it the thermostat?
Straight answer: An oven that's consistently off by more than about 15 °C is usually the temperature sensor or the control board, not the recipe. Uneven browning is more often the convection fan or a weak element.

Error codes you might see
Sensor faults show as F10/F30 (Frigidaire), F2/F3 (Whirlpool, KitchenAid) or tE (Samsung).
What it usually means
- Temperature sensor drifting out of calibration
- Control board not reading the sensor correctly
- Convection fan not spinning
- Element heating weakly or only in part
- Door gasket worn so heat escapes
Safe to check yourself
- Use an oven thermometer at the centre rack for 20 minutes and compare to the set temperature
- Check the door closes tightly and the gasket isn't torn or hanging
- Listen for the convection fan on a convection setting
- Some ovens let you adjust the calibration a few degrees in settings; try that first
Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before touching anything behind or under it. If you're not comfortable, skip the checks and call; the visit covers all of this.
