Electric dryer
Electric dryer won't start at all
My dryer is dead. No lights, no sound, nothing. What should I check?
Straight answer: Start at the panel: electric dryers use a double breaker and a tripped one is the most common cause of a totally dead dryer. After that it's the door switch, the start button, the thermal fuse or the control board.

Error codes you might see
Some models blink a light or show a partial display when only one leg of the 240 V supply is live.
What it usually means
- Dryer breaker tripped or one leg of the 240 V circuit lost
- Thermal fuse blown (some models won't start at all when it goes)
- Door switch failed, so the dryer thinks the door is open
- Start switch or push-to-start relay worn out
- Control board failed
Safe to check yourself
- Switch the dryer breaker fully off and back on
- Check the plug is seated; dryer plugs are heavy and can work loose
- Press the door firmly closed while pressing start
- Try a different cycle in case the timer or dial contact is dirty
Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before touching anything behind or under it. If you're not comfortable, skip the checks and call; the visit covers all of this.
Time to call when
- The breaker trips again as soon as you reset it (stop and call)
- Power is confirmed and the dryer is still silent
- The display works but start does nothing
What the visit looks like
A technician comes to your place, diagnoses the electric dryer and tells you what it needs and what it costs. You decide; nothing starts without your okay. $99 CAD covers the visit and diagnosis anywhere in our area.
Electric dryer repair: what to expect
Good to know
Can I test the outlet myself?
A 240 V dryer outlet isn't something to poke at. If the breaker is on and the dryer is dead, leave the testing to the technician.
Is a dead dryer worth repairing?
Often, yes. Door switches, fuses and start relays are reasonable repairs. The visit tells you which one and what it costs.
