Fridge & freezer
Fridge leaking water inside or onto the floor
Why is there water under the crisper drawers or on the kitchen floor?
Straight answer: Water inside the fridge almost always means the defrost drain is blocked. Water on the floor is usually the drain pan, the water line to the ice maker or the door seal. Both are common and usually quick to sort out.

What it usually means
- Defrost drain tube frozen or clogged, so meltwater backs up into the fridge
- Cracked or overflowing drain pan under the fridge
- Water supply line or inlet valve for the ice maker or dispenser dripping
- Door not sealing, causing condensation that pools at the bottom
Safe to check yourself
- Mop up and note whether the water is inside the fridge, inside the freezer or on the floor only
- Check whether the puddle is at the back (water line) or the front (door seal)
- If you have a water dispenser, turn off the shutoff valve behind the fridge if you can reach it safely
- Don't chip at ice with anything sharp
Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before touching anything behind or under it. If you're not comfortable, skip the checks and call; the visit covers all of this.
Time to call when
- Water keeps coming back after you wipe it up
- There's ice in the bottom of the freezer or under the drawers
- The floor near the fridge is wet more than once

Refrigerator & freezer repair: what to expect
Good to know
Can a leaking fridge damage my floor?
Yes, especially laminate and hardwood. That's the reason to deal with it this week rather than next month.
Is the ice maker the problem?
Sometimes. If the puddle is behind the fridge and you have an ice maker or water dispenser, the supply line or valve is a likely suspect.
