Washer not draining (OE, 5E, 5C, F9 E1 codes)
My washer stopped with water in the drum. Why won't it drain?
Straight answer: A washer that holds water is usually a blocked filter or hose, a drain pump that's packed it in, or a lid or door lock issue. Front-loaders have a filter you can check safely; after that, it's a visit.

Error codes you might see
LG shows OE. Samsung shows 5E or 5C. Whirlpool and Maytag show F9 E1. Bosch washers show E18. They all mean the same thing: the water isn't leaving fast enough.
What it usually means
- Drain pump filter clogged with coins, hair ties or lint
- Drain hose kinked, clogged or pushed too far into the standpipe
- Drain pump motor failed or something jammed the impeller
- Lid lock or door lock not confirming closed, so the cycle won't advance
- Control board not sending power to the pump
Safe to check yourself
- Unplug the washer. On a front-loader, open the small door at the bottom front and clean the pump filter; have towels and a shallow pan ready, there will be water
- Check the drain hose behind the machine isn't kinked or crushed against the wall
- Run a short rinse-and-spin cycle after cleaning the filter
- Don't force a locked door; most unlock on their own once the water is out
Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before touching anything behind or under it. If you're not comfortable, skip the checks and call; the visit covers all of this.
Time to call when
- The filter is clean and it still won't drain
- You hear a hum but no pumping, or nothing at all
- The code comes back within a wash or two
