Washer won't start or door stays locked (dL, dE, F5 E2 codes)
My washer has power but won't start, or the door is locked and won't open. What now?
Straight answer: A washer that lights up but refuses to run is usually waiting on the door lock, the lid switch or a control that didn't get the signal. A door that stays locked is often holding water or stuck on a safety check. Neither is normally a big repair.

Error codes you might see
LG shows dE or dL. Samsung shows dC or dE. Whirlpool and Maytag show F5 E2 or F5 E3. Bosch shows E16 or E17.
What it usually means
- Door lock assembly failed or the strike is misaligned
- Lid switch on a top-loader worn out
- Water still in the drum, so the lock won't release
- Control board or user interface not responding
- Child lock engaged by accident
Safe to check yourself
- Check for a child-lock icon on the display and hold the button it points to
- Unplug for two minutes and plug back in; a reset clears some lock faults
- If there's water inside, follow the drain page first
- Close the door firmly and listen for the lock click; a weak click is a clue
Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before touching anything behind or under it. If you're not comfortable, skip the checks and call; the visit covers all of this.
Time to call when
- The door still won't release after draining and a reset
- The lock code comes back every cycle
- Buttons respond but nothing happens when you press start
What the visit looks like
